The Alnwick Garden is a complex of formal gardens adjacent to Alnwick Castle in the town of Alnwick, Northumberland, England. The
very same castle is the second largest in the UK and the main difference between
this garden from other gardens is that it has the most dangerous plants
of the world, many of which can kill a person.
Behind the large black gates of the garden there are about a hundred varieties of
narcotic plants which are prohibited by law. There are also belladonna -
also known as deadly nightshade -, hemlock and many other plants that are hazardous to health.
Despite the fact that the Poison Garden Alnwick is relatively recent, the
history of the local gardens and parks has its roots way back in 1750.
Some herbs are originally grown in the garden but they were removed to
maintain the status of the poison garden.
Tourists and travelers visiting the gardens are admitted under strict
supervision of a special guide who ensures that no one touch the
poisonous plants. Everywhere signs are installed to remind visitors of the dangers.
For security purposes, the place is placed under surveillance around the clock and
some plantations even fenced off with barbed wire. The main objective of this
garden is to let people know how harmful and dangerous these plants can be.
