Forget Colonel Sanders, here are Malaysia’s top 3 foods that are best enjoyed cutlery-free - by the HungryGoWhere team
David Moyes and MU. Leather boots in Malaysian weather. Banana leaf rice with a fork and spoon. All these things share one thing in common – they just don’t go together. Here are some Malaysian favourites that just taste better when we dig right in and get our hands dirty.

Pisang Goreng (or goreng anything, for that matter)
A dessert, appetiser or snack that transcends cultural barriers and social status, battered and deep-fried banana fritters are a crowd favourite anywhere. You find stalls serving these freshly fried beauties at almost every main office area in town. Having oily fingers after the snack is all part of the eating experience!

Brickfields Pisang Goreng Stall
This fried banana stall also serves curry puffs (RM1.40), kuih bakul and sesame seed coated sweet potato balls (all priced at RM1.20 per piece). When eaten fresh out of the fryer, the banana fritters’ batter is crispy and perfectly complements the sweet, soft and mushy bananas on the inside. The stall has been operating for more than 20 years, a testament to the consistency of this father-and-son team in producing really good, finger-licking snacks.

This stall also sells deep fried sweet potato, keropok lekor (fish crackers, both the thin and thick versions), deep fried dough balls in addition to the pisang goreng which is very crispy, unless you leave it out for too long. RM2 will get you about 8 pieces of pisang goreng and another RM2 for 10 pieces of lekor. Absolutely delicious and makes for the perfect tea time snack with a cup of teh tarik.

Fried Chicken
Every successful civilisation is defined by whether or not it had its own take on the classic fried chicken. OK, that’s not true and I made it up, but Malaysians can proudly claim to have one of the most delicious versions of fried chicken with our ayam goreng berempah which packs a luscious mix of local herbs, deeply marinated in juicy hunks of chicken. Here’s where you can get your fill of the different versions of fried chicken available here:

Banana Leaf Rice
There are very few kinds of food that can be as fulfilling and comforting as banana leaf rice. Served on a banana leaf, with at least three vegetarian side dishes and your choice of curries or dhall, this southern Indian import has become a favourite for people of all races in Malaysia. While most will eat it with fork and spoon, it’s still best eaten using your hands, or fingers to be exact. There is a skill to be had in eating a serving of curry-soaked rice and vegetables using only the tip of your fingers. But even if you fail miserably and end up with curry fish smeared all over your palms, you’ll find a deep sense of satisfaction as you lick the last morsel of mutton curry off your finger tips. Here are our top picks for banana leaf rice:

Devi’s Corner
Devi’s banana leaf rice is a must try
Devi’s Corner went through a kind of revival this year, after many diners complained of low food quality and service. The corner, double-storey shop now serves some of the most delicious, rich and satisfying curries and side dishes I’ve ever tasted. The Kerala fish curry is worth mentioning, as was their crab curry and mutton dhalcha. Banana leaf rice is only served on the first floor, so go straight up the steps if you’re planning to get your hands deliciously dirty.

Kanna Curry House
You will rarely find an empty seat during lunchtime at Kanna Curry House
Kanna remains one of the most well-patronised banana leaf rice eateries. Its multiracial clientele can never get enough of its gamut of fried chicken drumsticks, assorted local fishes, fish eggs, quail and seafood that are cooked to order.

Sri Ganapathi Mess
Set up like a mess hall, diners will find themselves tackling a generous mound of perfectly cooked, fluffy long grain Indian rice doused with lashings of hearty dhall curry. Besides the house speciality of crab rasam, there’s also chicken rasam, which qualifies as the proverbial soup for one’s soul.
